Gwyneth Paltrow Isn’t Uncoupling from Acting Just Yet

Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t consciously uncoupling from acting . . . yet. The Goop C.E.O., who has spent the last few years retreating from the screen while spelunking into the lucrative, Himalayan salt-lined caves of wellness, doesn’t want people to think she’s given up Hollywood for good. Sure, she’s now officially retired from the Marvel universe, and hasn’t starred in a non-Marvel movie since 2015’s regrettable Mortdecai —but in an interview on the Today show Monday, Paltrow reiterated that she has not given up on the silver screen entirely.

“I’ve never said that I am quitting acting,” Paltrow told Savannah Guthrie. “Goop is my full-time passion . . . occasionally, when [an acting job] is the right thing and it works out around my children and my Goop life, I’m able to participate. I think I’m just not focused on full-time acting right now.”

Imagine Paltrow 15 years ago, seeing this clip and scratching her head at “my Goop life.” That’s basically a zen koan. But, yes, there it is: Paltrow isn’t technically done being an actor, though she’s spent the last few years focusing on her very successful business. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal last December, Paltrow noted that she hit major highs as an actress early on, including winning an Oscar when she was just 26. “I felt like I had hit all of those benchmarks. I’m very competitive with myself and I thought, well, what am I supposed to do now?” she said. “On some level, I had gotten the message, ‘If you’re not achieving something that’s quantifiable, you might not be worth that much.’ Somehow, that wire got fused together in my head. So, I was like, How do I keep achieving something?”

She went even further in a recent interview with The New York Times , saying she was “masquerading as an actor” before stepping back to concentrate on Goop. Though she still gets offers, Paltrow said, she has also gotten better at saying “no” to potential gigs, she added.

Despite shifting the bulk of her attention to Goop, Paltrow does have at least one major acting role up ahead: The Politician, Ryan Murphy’s musical Netflix series starring Ben Platt as an aspiring political leader. The cast also reportedly includes Barbra Streisand and Jessica Lange, though further details are still under wraps—so it’s still unclear who Paltrow will be playing on the series. But hey, acting! In the meantime, she has kept her chops sharp by popping up in an S.N.L. “Weekend Update” bit this past Saturday, poking fun at herself by playing a confused Goop employee named Fifer James. You may ask Paltrow whether she really, really will return to feature films sometime in the nearish future, but please: don’t ask Fifer to explain what Goop’s Himalayan salt scrub is and/or does.
